Well, that was rude wasn't it. Personally I'm betting both threads are correct; though that varnish is probably bronzing (the scientific term, not the metal) the residual remnants of minerals in the aluminium such as nickel. I forcefully limit my breakdown or I'd spend a year on a single drive. Somethings like those would wind up in my mixed pm recovery bin anyway for $4.xx per lb with nickel and silver plate etc so I've never given it thought.
Next time I come across one I'll dump it in acid and have it tested though now that you got my interest.
