Dealing with ants.
Twice. I had to deal with the big black ants. As I call them. Carpenter Ants. Here in Pa. Once they got a garbage can or whatever they will be in columns like soldiers. Just like a black line on a white background. My solution. It worked for me. I buy the ant trap poison containers. Then cut the metal lid off. Then mix the poison with sugar or honey. Remove cats or dogs from the scene. I find they are all gone within a few days.
I don't know how it is for ant mounds out west or other aggressive ant types. But my technique never failed.

Ants are nature’s garbage disposal.
If you have a problem with them that’s out of control there’s a much easier and passive way to get rid of them!
Make your own repeller.
Extremely high ph water, mint extract, linseed oil, and saffron.
Non-toxic, nothing dies. They go away. We spray the house edge in Chicago after every major storm.
And in the Philippines, we wash the floor with it regularly.

Btw, much like a few species of beetles, some ants have developed methods to break down and consume petroleum plastics.

They really eat almost anything.

The particular ant problem happened to me only twice in my life. 50 years ago in my first apartment. Then. About. 30 years ago in another apartment. Thats how I dealt with the problem. I respect insect life big time. Bees. Nature's pollenators. I don't mind leaving a pile of leaves or so around so they can make it through the winter. Also. Thought of growing milkweed. For our endangered Monarch butterflies.
But. When. I got ants in my pants. Got to do something.
I find being clean. Keeps roaches and ants away.
Nature is out of balance. Due to our human intervention.
Read about the the lonely Groundhog. Woodchuck. The Whistle pig. Whatever you wish to label him.
That animal was a forrest dweller in this here USA. Small in numbers. Just a burrow or 2 under a tree. Then here come the settlers to the NewWorld. Cutting trees. Building fences. Starting fields of cleared ground. Wow. What a place to feast for our little grass eating rodent. They increased in numbers beyond belief. I removed 35 of those little loving ibdividuals from a farm in one summer. I wasn't even really trying. The strange thing is. At one time as you look over a field. You may see 5 at one time. Just multiple what you see by 10. Maybe more.
Like I said. Nature is out of its natural balance.
The examples can go on and on. Lion Fish. Boa snakes. Snakehead fish. Tilapia in ponds. Zebra mussels in the Great Lakes.

I read if we had a nuclear holocaust. The Cockaroach would make it through.

Mythbusters tested that. I don't recall all the insects they tested but cockroaches were not one of the best at surviving radiation

A, the idea that they would survive at ground zero is fiction. A poor memory of a poorly (at the time) covered report.

B, as much as I love the mythbusters, they did that test completely incorrectly.
The wrong type of roaches sources from the wrong place. It’s a common (well, to those involved in the sicenfe side of animal evolution) that the same species adapts differently to different environments.

Take the German cockroach, the most common one in the us. Has an entirely different life style in this country from its native land, or tropical of Southern Asia vs northern India vs South America.

Yes, roaches were one of the few animals found within the immediate blast zone area. Not ground zero. But within a few miles. Ants too.

Now I want to go dig up that old report.
