So maybe things a dumb question…

But if they’re gold finger cards, why can’t I just toss the laptop wifi cards in the GFC pile (which pays higher…)

You could... but two things could happen. First boardsort could see that you’re mixing categories and decide to downgrade your material. Or they don’t notice that you’re mixing categories and the overall payout that they receive for Goldfinger cards starts to go down because of the inferior material that’s now mixed in and the price of GFCs goes down for everyone.
