Aww c'mon it's only a 10 hour drive if you don't stop and average 100mph the whole way! That said, plug the sucker in and see if it hums. If you can test the tubes to see if everything is strong, depending on the type of tube the radio uses, you can sell those alone for anywhere from $5 bucks to several hundred if they are Western Electric (very sought after). If you don't want to put in all that work, the metal chassis is something you could sell as a unit and ship with relative ease with a metric ton of bubble wrap. Given the age of the Radio, and the fact she has a 78 player, my guess is that there's not a whole lot of spare parts out there. It would be sad to see you tear her apart like that, since this is a serious piece of 40's nostalgia that is disappearing rapidly. Heck, I'm interested but getting it here would probably cost a couple hundred bucks on a skid. Not to mention the wife would murder me in my sleep.
