Under the right circumstances a dot matrix printer will pull up to 5 or $6 in scrap for current ones. More for older ones. But there are parts in working ones that get into triple digits.
The real money from a doa dot matrix printer is the aluminium shells in many, and font expansion cards. The only printers I actively seek out are impact like type setters and dot matrix; and laser printers. Ram expansions in laser units command double digits. Ink jet printers are literally a dime a dozen for it and not worth it. I pull the cartridges, remove the shell and trays (usually abs plastic) and if it’s easy access I’ll use my screw trimmer or bolt cutter to snap loose the primary drive motor. Rest in whole goes in steel shred. Laser printers I tend to take the time to test components but that’s a different thread. Plotters can bring major money in scrap. Especially since they’re usually free and some places will PAY you to get rid of it. Anything other than a micro plotter (20lb ish desk unit) weighs 50lbs+, average around 125lbs, they make a mess no matter how careful you are, and they’re huge. If you pay me I’m game, if it’s free as long as you help get it in the truck it’s gone. But I won’t pay a penny for one. I can get $75-$100 in scrap alone for a plotter but it takes many hours to get them apart and as I said, they make a royal mess. Expect 4-6 hours to get one apart completely, about the same in post op cleanup. (Yes I know cannon and Kodak etc make little “plotters” that are dye sublimation units, they’re overpriced junk and will fetch $2 in scrap if your lucky).
