I assume by cut the fins you mean I have to also cut the entire surrounding box material? Probably not worth that level of hassle of so.

better off just removing the little clip and removing the fins all together im my opinion

yeah you want to get rid of the bulk of the plastic so the frame and fins cut back as close to the actual motor.

What's annoying is it's not always just a simple plastic "clip" holding the drive shaft. Sometimes it's a skinny metal o-ring with such good tolerance that a hammer is all that's left to disassemble with. Which isn't a problem if you don't mind breaking everything :D

you mean the steel C clips ? I jam a small screw driver in those and pop the clip off. But a hammer will work too.

Some companies actually have a fan rate though so ask.
Usually it would cover everything from a tiny processor fan to a household box fan to industrial air blowers.

Not the ones with the hooks on the end, literally an O-ring recessed into the drive shaft with almost no gap in the ends

I tend to smash them with a 16 or 20 oz hammer. Sometimes I use the claw side to actually break the plastic. I angle them on my vice and pop the fan out of the square housing first though.

I have a bucket full with about 10 pounds of small motors. I have not inquired if my local yards will buy them. I am hoping they do if not I may be holding them until I find a buyer.

For what it's worth, I do remove the blades as mentioned above. Sometimes there is no access to the clip/o-ring so I'll use adjustable pliers to grab bergen the blades and pry that off. Either way that whole chunk usually goes straight into steel. If there's a brass piece in it I'll set it in another pile to knock out later. Some fans blades have a neat 5 lobe magnet in there.

From here I can usually use the same pliers to pull the motor off the plastic. Sometimes this pulls the small board off too, otherwise I pull it off. If the motor has brass I set it aside to get that off later, if not it's electric motor at my local yard.

If the plastic has brass or steel in it still I check with a magnet, if steel I break the plastic post off and toss in steel, if brass I get all the plastic off.
