A/C definitely not.
A backplane tends to be a board that expands the number of sockets from a main board or, due to the dimensions of the housing, changes the orientation of a socket to allow other boards to fit correctly. Pci expansions from a motherboard or a hard drive connection array (probably a proper name for that I don't know) at the front of a server are good examples. Usually it's all sockets without much other population and commonly has gold fingers.
