Ok folks i have a simple question. Why sell to board sort? I absolutely love this platform and being able to talk to people. But I have seen better prices else where so why is boardsort so good? So big? Do u guys have bad luck selling other places?. I seen cash for computer scrap is higher pay in like 80% of catergories. Anyone ever deal with them? Im just a simple country buy and I am adding 2 and 2 and getting 7 and not sure wth is goin on.
Just looking for honest opinions which ever way they may lead

Cashfor computerscrap prices are listed from February. I don't deal with them but I can pretty much guarantee its not the same now. Says right on their site price subject to change without notice.

BigSteve, I have encountered a lot of used car salesmen in my hometown who were skilled at playing with the numbers, and suddenly an old clunker running on rims suddenly overnight became grandmas sunday chariot with only 13 actual miles (all that smoke from the tailpipe was just a mosquito fogging feature).
I don't spend a lot of time looking for a buyer who will offer more for e-scrap. I do get more for the other metals, ferrous and non ferrous at my local yards, who do not buy e-scrap except as shred, for 8 or 9 cents per pound. So, I only take the boards and items with precious metal content to Boardsort...not worth hauling the material that I can sell locally, and I'm sure Boardsort would be just as happy not to have to deal with the junk.
I have seen "higher prices" claimed in certain sections of the country, and ridiculously low in other remote sections. Frankly, I don't believe their claims . I did check out one who offered $8 per pound for capacitors, but realized it was not an invitation for a Saturday Scrapper like me to come see them. I just didn't have the 40,000 pound minimum they required.
About thiry years ago, ( I had to think three times to remember it was so long ago...nah, it was only twenty years ago, a local yard gave me a tractor trailer load of old crt monitors and the Apple of the type used in school, with the pretty colored monitors and the goodies inside. I broke those down and saved the boards, also from the apple lle. A local independent scrapper came by and paid me 30 cents a pound for the boards, 500 pounds total. He took them to a business in another city that paid a good price. But, this place that paid well did not advertise or accept from the general public.
In order to sell to them, one had to make an appointment for an interview. I don't know what type of questions were asked, but either they agreed to buy from you or you were rejected. My buyer said he had to pay $3000 to another scrapper to even find out about this company, and he offered to sell me the contact information for only $1500, but since I had no prospects of getting more e scrap, I declined. However, the company who paid the good prices (actually the only one who bought e scrap back then) kept a close eye and banned sellers who tried to slip garbage by them like throwing a few pounds of miscellaneous garbage in a gaylord of boards...say a couple pounds of lead shot .
I guess to sum up what I would have said in a more cognizant manner later in the day, is, even though the money pool looks inviting, don't jump in headfirst with both feet before testing the water rolling off a ducks back for actual greenback dollars.

They don’t update their prices frequently but I’ve never not gotten what is posted. I sent stuff in a week ago and they are still paying the currently posted rates…RAM is still $58/lb which is WELL above board sort

I guess you need to login to see there prices?

One obvious benefit vs the mentioned alternative is no minimum shipment.

No you don’t. You also don’t really need to sort anything (within reason).

Oh, silly me, missed the link to it.

Okay, from how I'm reading it, you have to remember they pay for shipping and take it out of the price of your material.

I always pay for my own shipping - I’ve never used their labels

Cash for computer scrap screwed me bad.

And thousands of others didn’t know they got screwed.

As in legal procedures etc.
It’s when I joined boardsort and never looked back.

To answer the question OP, there are 3 types of paid recycling options for escrap. (4)
1) dedicated sorters (eg boardsort) that ship tonnage of presort to a dedicated company or companies at fixed but floating rates per class and grade. The top of the pyramid I’ve explained previously.
2) recyclers who buy escrap. They sell to #1 and pay a bit below, rarely less 20% or more.
3) middlemen precious metals buyers. They buy at 40-60% value based on averages per class and sell to a refinery at 80-95% recovery value on spot.

(4) internet based buyers such as myself. We pay from below scrap rate to just above for most of what we take in. And repair as much as we can for resale.
