Cash for computer scrap screwed me bad.

As in legal procedures etc.
It’s when I joined boardsort and never looked back.

To answer the question OP, there are 3 types of paid recycling options for escrap. (4)
1) dedicated sorters (eg boardsort) that ship tonnage of presort to a dedicated company or companies at fixed but floating rates per class and grade. The top of the pyramid I’ve explained previously.
2) recyclers who buy escrap. They sell to #1 and pay a bit below, rarely less 20% or more.
3) middlemen precious metals buyers. They buy at 40-60% value based on averages per class and sell to a refinery at 80-95% recovery value on spot.

(4) internet based buyers such as myself. We pay from below scrap rate to just above for most of what we take in. And repair as much as we can for resale.

Oh man! I’ve never had a problem with them everything’s been accurate to what I’ve shipped. I’d be curious what happened to you but I’m sure that’s a long story!

Supposedly it had to do with a location move but a highly refined gold bar “got lost”.
After months of complaints and a message that some user here sent them a link to, I complained on boardsort, and they wanted to “fix the issue”, which coincided with the timing of a legal notice from our lawyer.

They offered an immediate payment high enough to be more than a court case would have cost. But far less than the bar was worth.

I’m a well-versed refiner in my own right. I use high voltage to separate all ferromagnetic impurities from a melt in melt state.
That’s why I’m so against people posting about refining. Beyond the let’s-not-cut-into-BS’s-margins, I know the actual realities of doing so.

This wasn’t a bar of melted steel plated pins you find on ebay overpriced. It was a 92% fine antennae melt. With no iron, the remaining 8% was aluminium, carbon, tin, zinc, and mostly copper.

The original post is still here somewhere.
I’ll never forget that.

I’m not the average scrap seller. I really do refine a good quantity of what I have myself and have a good relationship with a pawn shoppe that is over a decade long as a middleman for me to sell my bars.
Boardsort, Chris, has been very open to testing and evaluating the boards I send them. Often things most people will never see let alone scrap.
They have worked with me to properly sort all sorts of stuff. And, I believe any ego stroke aside, I’ve had a minor play in the ever-expanding expanding classes over time.

It was enough to follow up my post with a situation resolved note, but I refuse to ever promote them.i have no proof.
But I truely believe they simply tossed it into the standard for blocks they get and called it a day despite being told and confirmed I was sending in a highly qualified bar.

The question was opinion so here is mine….

I have dealt with cash for comp scrap twice. The first time was before I knew what I was doing and somehow they were the only ones I found on the internet that would take small quantities. I sent them about 40 lbs of totally mixed up stuff and they sent me a check for $10. That’s 25 cents per pound. Then I discovered Boardsort’s. I knew a little more at that point so I realized those guys screwed me. I will reiterate that I didn’t know anything so I will take partial blame. Later on I had a large quantity of higher value items and was curious if they could do any better than boardsort so I tried calling them and got no response. I emailed them and have not received a response. That was over 2 years ago so I decided they don’t want my stufff. Any of it!

I do this as a side hustle because I have access to a lot of higher value free stuff. It’s good extra money and it’s fun to tear shit apart and not have to reassemble it. If something is a hassle, I can take a hammer or pry bar to it and not worry about it. I usually ship a pallet a year with 1500-2000 lbs on it. If I don’t feel like taking apart laptops or phones, they buy them as is. If I want to make sure power supplies get recycled properly with the least risk of landfill usage, I can pay shipping and break even as opposed to making a few cents a pound locally and a bunch of stuff going to waste. Ultimate flexibility works great for my situation.

Not once have I ever had any issue with communication with chris. Not once have I ever not been able to find out what I need to know by either reading the forum or posting to it. Boardsort and this forum are almost the most awesome thing for me. My wife is the most awesome. If you don’t have refinery quantities, I can’t imagine why anyone would consider using any other method than Boardsort.
