Is this a slot processor and if so, do I need to remove the black casing or can it be sent in as is? If not, what do I categorize this as?

Yes, that's right. You should remove the shell.

If it works and depending on the model you might be more worth selling it as it. the 450mhz, some of the early 66fsb ones and the Pentium II 300 SL2W8 are worth a good bit if you can find a buyer. But yes its a slot CPU and you will need to take it out of the shell. if its a SL2W8 and works I might buy it, those suckers can do 500mhz all day long.
