I have a few of these boards that I am working on that has a thin aluminum sheet over the top of the chips. Curiosity got the better of me and I peeled one off and surprise, there is gold inside. My question is, if I remove the aluminum sheet, will that make this a gold cap board? They are not easy to remove, I basically have to punch a small hole in the center and peel off bit by bit. Thanks!

I feel like that's not a cap, but I'm not sure if this is a normal thing to be on any ceramic chip (or maybe in a ceramic chip just not seen)

Maybe someone else has experience with this style?

In my opinion. No way Gold Cap. Why? If that IC had a gold cap on it. AND you removed the gold cap. You would find the same gold laden interior. As you have pictured. The manufacturer made a smooth move putting a non gold cap on those chips. But. I am sure it performs. That board is High Telecom. In my opinion. It's a good example of good engineering to save money and yet get circuit board performance.

I posted a video of a gold cap chip that had a gold cap on it removed. You can see the gold underneath the cap. The video's purpose is to show the masking etc. On the die. But. You can clearly see the gold involved under the chip. So. Technically even though you have uncovered gold under the that non gold covering. Your short changing the grade by going for Gold Cap. Why? The Gold from the Cap isn't there. You dont have a Gold Cap. It's High Telcom.

not a gold cap, that's the CPU/IC die you are looking at. I second high telecom.
