This is on the mobo of an old laptop. The board is telco easy so my first thought would be don't touch it and get the telco grade. But it says 486...will it go as a 486 CPU if I pull it? If not then what?

Those are made of fiber so they aren't 486/386 "ceramic" chip category.

If you desolder it you're at pentium/mac ceramic IF it has a gold cap.
Ic class if it doesn't.

Sorry wanted to verify my history before posting exactly

if you pull that "486" chip off, you are going to get normal IC chip price for it... the 486 cpu classification is only for the chips with gold pin grid array in the ceramic body with gold lid. The gold lid/gold bonding wires/gold alloy brazing in the internal cavity is where the bulk of the precious metal content is.

That type of quad flat package 486 chip is newer and set in a epoxy with a different internal structure and are not anywhere near as valuable as the "traditional CPU."

Unless you pull that off and for some reason there is gold legs or a gold cap under it (which I have never seen) then it is just a plain old IC chip.
