So I get crap tons of wire and copper and was thinking of sending in wire and 1# copper to boardsort as they pay far more then anyone local to me that and I have to take a day off work to take it in locally. My local yard is not the best anymore since the older folks retired the new guys don't know jack too.

Has anyone here sent #1 and wire to them in larger quantities? I cast all my #2 for different projects but #1 and shorter thinner wire I would be willing to send in all day long. I just don't want to be sending in 50+ lb of wire or 100s of lbs of #1 if they're just taking as a courtesy.

They are fine with wire all day long.

that's good because I have a lot of it, and the payout for mix wire is better then 1# wire at my local yard too. gonna send some as a test run with my next shipment.

Sent a test shipment of wire, about 13lbs, got to be creative so the shipping label does not eat into the scrap payout to much, also sent some number 1 some number 2 that was to big for me to melt without cutting and some clean alu/copper heat sinks. Hope it all goes well as my local yards change in staff, policy and management is crap. They got this new policy that all non magnetic cookware is stainless... even copper pots and pans are payed out as stainless... yeah dumb. And they no longer pay extra for extruded aluminum and the worst thing of all is if you bring scrap to them in a bucket they keep the bucket, if you want the bucket back they don't take the scrap... yeah scammy. also their scales are not the most accurate anymore to say the least.

On a side note would board sort care if I just sent a big box of lose small bits of wire? Most of the wire I get that I don't strip for casting is thinner and shorter. 14-22 AWG and around 1.5ft or shorter. I was thinking of just tossing 20-30lb of lose wire in a box and putting my e scrap in a second smaller box inside the box of wire. I know that's kinds messy but it would let me pack more in a box. The 13lb of wire I just sent I put in bags of around 2lb each. I thought bagging it would prevent any messes when opening the box but if board sort does not mind getting a big box of lose wire I'll sent it in that way.

I've sent in boxes (granted never wire) with loose material in the box but always packed with other things in separate boxes and tight enough that nothing could possibly mix unless the box itself was destroyed.

I know Lost uses wire as packaging, not sure if he bundles those at all or if they're just loose like packing peanuts would be.

I would think that as long as all the other material can be removed without much fuss and all the wire is still in the box after that, there's no issue.

I was kinda thinking like packing peanuts. Most of my wire I get is super sort and could make a mess for board sort of someone dropped the box lol. I still have a few 100lbs of wire and was going to start sending it in with other shipments of clean alu, number 1 and number 2 that's to big for me to cast. If I can bag/box the other stuff up and just toss in the a boat load of lose wire I think I'll do that.

You should probably start to bag up wire shorter than 3inches or so. Otherwise it could slip under the flaps and not get counted.

Ask marked point out I use long wires as bedding and capping in boxes. I pancake shorter runs with bow knots. For the sides.

But I box smaller boards on their own to put in the larger box and + strap with zip ties, making a plus.

That's why I bagged the wire. I have a lot under a foot. that and it could make a mess. thanks for the info. I'll keep it in mind!
