^ very great tips cat!

I post this quite a bit on Facebook for newbies and others alike.

Sheet/Extrusion/Cast Aluminum = not magnetic, no spark, no reaction to copper sulphate.
Stainless Steel = not magnetic (normally; some is slightly magnetic), sparks, no reaction to copper sulphate.
Zinc/die-cast/pot metal = not magnetic, no spark, turns black when reacting with copper sulphate.
Brass = not magnetic, no spark; no reaction to copper sulphate.
Copper = not magnetic, no spark, no reaction to copper sulphate.

Stainless being non-magnetic is a consumer level misnomer. The vast majority of stainless is actually magnetic.
The spark test is the sure way to test though.
