I use discord fairly often in conjunction with a game I play and for awhile I've been pondering, would a server on that platform have any benefit to the scrap community in general or even specifically for Boardsort? The forum is a wonderful resource and I certainly wouldn't want to start something that competes with it. But if that's something that could work on its own or even with Boardsort, would that be worthwhile for anyone? Or does something exist already that I missed?

Thoughts, concerns, suggestions?

There’s communities there already.
But as the old adage goes build it and they will come.

Email Chris and ask permission to use the name. If he clears it have at it. You know they’ll show up eventually. ;)

I encounter that a lot, someone's gotta get started or nobody will. :P

Figured I'd ask for community input before I bugged Chris directly.

I'd join the Discord. I use 'Cord quite frequently for business and games.

It could be a way to explain , digest, and summary items for people in depth; or just discussions in general

Easier to upload videos or short explanations

I did start setting something up. Probably need another set of eyes on it at some point and to definitely reach out to Chris.

The problem is moving off site eventually leads to jettisoning the site’s social aspect. Not always but often enough.
And some people won’t follow.

It’s happened to me a few times over the years. Sites I was a long time, regular, and heavy contributor went to social platforms and then closed the forum pages of the site.
I didn’t follow.

It’s been Years since I used facebook. I have (had?) a MySpace page.
Aside from Instagram the chance of me heading over to any other social platform is very very low.

Just keep that in mind.

That's a big reason why I wanted input. Also, none of the discussions that are here would be automatically there.

I’m not against it. If done correctly and limited in scope (say just discord) it can be a great asset.

But having seen CLZ (widely considered the best collectible’s software suite in the world) lost the entirety of their social group in the move, and social media became support and help only.

And there’s the tale of DigiWiki (DW). They under various names went from a multi/host usenet to a bbs to a website wiki to a phpbb (like this) … and now no longer exists after closing the bb and going social.

So yes: I’m all for it and if Chris is behind it I’ll even help. But discussion has to be made on how and what platform.

As a side note I was actually considering doing a patron thing for restarting my what’s inside it. With my mother’s passing and the house almost rebuilt from the fire… I’m going to have some free time this summer.
Let the users donate to a list of potential buys. I then take them apart, put them together. Refurb them. All on much higher quality videos with audio and commentary.
