anyone have any idea about this chip? Front says Intel, back looks like gold leaf? Gold looking square thing next to chip in the picture was screwed down over the chip?

Thanks...Bob

The second cpu looks like a run of the mill brown fibre cpu for green/brown fibre

The spreader in the first picture is gold plated. The cpu; is another story. This is one that doesn’t fit into the standard categories. It LOOKS like someone removed the standard cap and put their own on. In reality... it’s different. You’ll need to email Chris directly for a class (email link on front page of the site).
Please do Let us know what he says.

I've sent two emails directly to Chris and have received no reply. Rest assured there was no "manipulation" of any part of this item. There aren't two CPU's in the picture, just front and back with the "spreader". If you look closer it looks as if the Intel chips was from the early 90's? If you zoom in it looks as if there is gold foil on the chip? Simply clueless??? Thanks....Bob

I wasn’t inferring you did anything bad.
Actually de-capping chips is fairly common, in the higher end of things. Like record breaking and crypto mining. It’s just the first time I’ve seen it pop up here.

On the other hand with you saying this is front and back of the same cpu it’s probably a board mounted chip. And it that case would probably get green/brown fibre with metal. Or pinless.

Rest assured Chris will get back to you. Usually takes a week or less. Monday and Thursday are most likely.
