Cell boards come up like that a lot. Especially on scrap re-buys like eBay, Craig’s, etc. A bare board that hasn’t been stripped (one not finished) will usually clear peripheral. Stripped boards often leave behind “junk” such as solder and pins in through holes. Things that take it out of the specific scrap class and make it a standard board for recycling. The same reason ram blanks have a separate class that stripped ram will not go in. Cell phones are a hot target for DIY refiners and parts scrapping. Specialised scrappers, including myself, will often harvest some items for resale such as the CPU and ram. Others will harvest most or all ICs from boards; as they are stacked, aka 3D, ICs. Where Boardsort isn’t set up to monitor and buy such items as a commodity; others are: who specialise in just a single material. There’s a reason cell phone boards are one of the highest payouts for scrap boards.
It’s unfortunate, but understandable, that boardsort can not buy 3D chips at a higher rate. Such buyers usually have very strict rules: a minimum weight (usually dozens of lbs), a consistency requirement (often weekly), and harsh punishments for mistakes. Get a single, single-layer-slc ram chip in the mix and loose your contract. And in some extreme cases your paycheque for that order as well. It’s not a class I see boardsort sorting out any time soon for that reason. Boardsort is a friendly company and that’s a very cut-throat commodity that requires a level of mean I’m not believing the guys are capable of keeping up.
