I got my first, green, three digit, vacuum tube display.
And I'm going to keep it all together.

It's a '73, Sharp Elsi Mate EL-120 calculator.
It had some corrosion on the gold traces on the back side of the PCBD which cleaned up pretty good.
The capacitors look good, flat, no leakage.
Haven't powered it up yet, and I'm hoping it works.

I'm on the look out for something with a NIXIE tube or tubes in it. Time will tell!

Thought I'd share

Thanks Lost, muchly appreciated!

Looking at the traces on the back of the board.
Would that be palladium as well?
Also, the silver looking solder appears as though it was applied over the the gold traces. Am I correct in my assumption? That all of the traces up to the eyelets/passthru holes are gold? Then the wires and components were pushed thru the holes and solder flowed out over the gold trace?

It really looks that way to me and if so, why flow the solder so far away from the soldered connection. Seems like they’d be following the old “bigger the blob, better the job” thingy, kinda, sort of.

Sharp usually used a nickel silver blend. But this has been repaired at some point. The mount of that wire is a dead giveaway of table work, not production.
It’s too old for non-mechanised production. The question becomes here, from a collectors standpoint, was it fixed on the line or somewhere after that. I can’t tell.

And yes the production method explains the design. Automation and reflow on a completed board, cooled and tested by hand.
Much of begin japanology is legally on YouTube so look up the episode on calculators. And there’s a thriving collectors market. There’s tons of video footage, modern and archive. But like early video games, prior to the 80s no two are identical.
